Magnitude 5.4 quake hits Cagayan seas; Intensity IV in Calayan

MANILA, Philippines — A 5.4-magnitude earthquake struck waters north of northern Luzon’s landmass on Friday evening, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said.

According to Phivolcs’ latest bulletin, Intensity IV was felt in Calayan, Cagayan, while Intensity III was recorded in Bacarra, Ilocos Sur, and Flora in Apayao.

Intensity II was also felt in Sinait, Ilocos Sur.  Other Instrumental Intensities were also recorded in Pasuquin, Ilocos Norte (Intensity IV), and in Vigan City (Intensity II).

Phivolcs said that the tectonic movement was located 47 kilometers southwest of Calayan, at a depth of 45 kilometers below the ground.  Aftershocks may still be expected, according to Phivolcs. There were no reports of any damage from the tremor as of this posting.
