TACLOBAN CITY—At least 14 health care workers and seven employees of the Department of Health in Eastern Visayas (DOH) have been infected with coronavirus.

Tacloban City reported 17 new cases involving 10 health care workers of the Eastern Visayas Regional Medical Center (EVRMC) and seven DOH regional employees.

The city now has a total of 54 COVID-19 cases.

Borongan City in Eastern Samar also recorded its first coronavirus case involving a health care worker assigned to the EVRMC.

Dr. Rodel Delgado, Eastern Samar health officer, said Borongan’s first COVID-19 patient was a man who had contact with an infected co-worker.

The male patient is now on quarantine.

Mayor Ann Frances Petilla, of Palo town, Leyte province, on her Facebook account also confirmed three new cases of COVID-19 involving health care workers at the EVRMC.

“Our health workers are fighting during this pandemic,” Petilla said.

“Let’s not waste their sacrifices and help them to suppress the spread of COVID-19,” she said.

“Let us all observe the health protocols against the coronavirus. Always wear your face mask and practice social distancing,” she added.

As of June 23, Eastern Visayas has a total of 431 COVID-19 cases.
