MANILA, Philippines — Over 85,000 students in Makati City’s public schools will receive a learner’s package and free internet load to assist them in distance learning for the 2020-2021 school year, the city government said on Tuesday.
In a statement, Makati Mayor Abby Binay said pre-school to senior high school students will receive free internet load valid for five hours daily and learner’s package which consists of a flash drive, printed modules, and two washable face masks.
The flash drive contains learning modules provided by the Department of Education Makati, which can be accessed without an internet connection. The flash drive can be used through gadgets such as laptops.
Binay said teachers will upload lessons at the flash drive and provide printed modules per week which will be given to parents.
If gadgets are unavailable, students can use printed modules instead.
Printed modules are “self-directed instructional modules for all subjects or learning areas which students can answer.”
Online lessons for students are also available at the DepEd Makati Learning Resources Portal.
Aside from this, Google Classrooms, Facebook Messenger, and other online apps may also be used for online teaching and follow-up sessions.
Binay assured the public that the local government is working with DepEd to make sure that education will continue despite the cancelation of physical classes due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
“The city government has been actively involved in current efforts of the Department of Education to ensure that quality education continues to be accessible to the youth amidst the crisis. We are committed to making the blended learning approach work to the advantage of our students, through equipping them with the right tools,” Binay said in a statement.
Previously, DepEd said it would suspend face-to-face classes as the coronavirus disease remains a threat without a vaccine.
