THE 45th national convention of the Association of Philippine Medical Colleges (APMC) will be held in Cebu City on Feb. 9-11 with the theme “Professionalism in Medical Education.”

The Cebu Institute of Medicine (CIM) will host the convention.

The event will kick off with a Mass at the CIM Social Hall at 9 a.m. of Feb. 9.

Dr. Cawilihan Zubiri will be the keynote speaker.

After lunch, a panel discussion composed of a teacher, an administrator, a student and a clinician will deal with the main topic: the role of current medical education programs in teaching professionalism and how medical education programs contribute to professionalism. There will be a welcome dinner at 6 p.m. at the Casino Español de Cebu.

The theme for the morning session of  Day 2  (February 10) will be “Professionalism: Teaching innovations in Medical Education.” This will tackle topics like “How to Teach: Challenges in teaching professionalism,” “How to Teach: Challenges in teaching professionalism, tools and strategies for modeling and reinforcing professionalism,” “Should our cultural values affect our commitment to medical professionalism?” and “Regional cultural experiences.”

The afternoon session’s theme will be “Inter-professional education and improving collaborative practice.” Topics include “Leadership,” “Professional medical speakers: Conflicts of interest?,” “How should professionalism be assessed in the undergraduate and postgraduate medical education?”  and “Assessment of Physician’s competence in professionalism.”

Also to be held on the second day are the workshop for medical students entitled “One last challenge: Transforming  students and  residents in their commitment to excellence and on-going professional development” and a talk on “Medical blogging: Keeping it ethical” by a Cebuano doctor. A research paper contest will be held in the afternoon at CIM Amphitheater 3.

Capping the day’s activities will be a Heritage Tour of Cebu City  tagged as “Gabi-i sa Kabilin,” followed by a dinner at Fort San Pedro.

On Feb. 11, a plenary session on “A patient’s perspective of professionalism in medicine” will take place, to be followed by the “APMC Declaration of Medical Professionalism” and the closing ceremonies and lunch.
