A police officer rescued an 11-month-old boy who stopped breathing while attending a protest in California, USA, with his mother.
The boy’s mother ran toward the policeman when her son lost consciousness at the demonstration on May 31. The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department posted security camera footage of the incident on its Facebook page yesterday, June 17.
The mother brought her son to the protest with another woman. When he suddenly stopped breathing, the women immediately made their way across a parking lot to authorities that were monitoring the demonstration.
Deputy Cameron Kinsey quickly responded to the women’s request for help at the parking lot. Kinsey then assessed the child before performing a “mouth sweep” with his finger, which dislodged vomit from the child.
The “mouth sweep” procedure is used to remove an object from a choking person’s airways, as per Harvard Health Publishing.
After inducing the vomit, the child regained consciousness and began breathing again. Paramedics later arrived and took the kid to a hospital for treatment.
They later found out that the toddler had swallowed a coin, which blocked his airways. Kinsey’s move had apparently moved the coin sideways and unblocked the child’s airways.
“None of that other stuff matters,” Kinsey said when recalling the incident. “Just the baby.” /ra
