CHR slams attack on Sulu police station

MANILA, Philippines — The Commission on Human Rights (CHR) on Tuesday denounced the attack on Parang Police Station in Sulu province, which killed two policemen and wounded two others.

The attack, which was allegedly unprovoked, occurred on Saturday and was perpetrated by two unidentified men.

“CHR condemns this attack on the right to life. Vigilante violence and killings contribute to the growing culture of impunity in the Philippines. No individuals should ever be subject to cruel or inhumane treatment that leads to injury or death,” CHR spokesperson Jacqueline De Guia said in a statement.

The fatalities were identified as Cpl. Mudar Salamat and Pat. Arjun Putalan.

Injured were Executive Master Sgt. Hamid Saribbon and Senior Master Sgt. Harold Nieva. The CHR said that it would conduct its own investigation of the incident. —Patricia Denise M. Chiu
