MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Education announced on Monday that guidelines for the revised K to 12 curricula to be used for the coming school year are now available online.
“We have made the MELCs (Most Essential Learning Competencies) available for free download at DepEd Commons to help our teachers focus on what is most essential given the challenge in learning delivery this school year,” Undersecretary Alain Pascua said in a statement.
The MELCs and its guidelines are available for download at commons.deped.gov.ph/melc.
The K to 12 MELCs and its corresponding guidelines were prepared by the DepEd’s Bureau of Curriculum Development (BCD) and approved by Education Undersecretary for Curriculum and Instruction Diosdado San Antonio, according to Pascua.
According to its guidelines, the MELCs is part of the department’s response to develop resilient education systems, especially during emergencies and will enable DepEd to focus instruction on the “most essential and indispensable” competencies.
“We are trying to make everything as accessible as we can, through DepEd Commons and our other available channels. It is upon us to make sure our teachers and learners have everything they need in order to continue learning” Pascua said.
Learning competencies, according to DepEd, refer to the “knowledge, understanding, skills, and attitudes that students need to demonstrate in every lesson and/or learning activity.”
DepEd earlier warned groups and individuals selling printed learning materials and modules online and reminded that these materials can all be accessed for free at DepEd Commons and Learning Portal.
Printouts will also be provided for those enrolled in public schools, said DepEd, adding it is also busy working on radio and TV-based learning for the August 24 opening of classes.
As part of DepEd’s Basic Education Learning Continuity Plan amid the coronavirus crisis, the K to 12 curricula had been streamlined to 5,689 MECLs from the original 14,171, or a reduction by 60 percent.
The revised curriculum would be used “only for this year, for now,” according to DepEd Undersecretary Nepomuceno Malaluan.
