Cebu mayor tests positive for COVID-19

CEBU CITY, Philippines –Mayor Junard “Ahong” Chan of Lapu-Lapu City in Cebu is now in isolation after he got infected with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) which causes the new coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19).

In a statement posted on his Facebook account on Friday (June 12) morning, Chan asked his supporters not to worry.

“I am on a high spirit. The doctors that are monitoring me are confident that I will be able to swiftly recover and go back to work,” said Chan, the first local official in Cebu who has been tested positive for COVID-19.

“I am an asymptomatic patient. I do not experience any symptoms of the disease. I do not feel sick and as if I don’t have any infection,” said Chan who had been visiting and checking the barangays prior to the infection.

The mayor said he received the results of his swab test on the evening of June 11 and decided to announce it on Facebook on Friday morning.

None of his household members  tested positive for COVID-19.
