ZAMBOANGA CITY, Zamboanga del Sur –– At least five barangays in Isabela City in Basilan are flooded due to continuous heavy rain since Monday afternoon.
Jamju Rivera, Isabela City disaster risk reduction and management officer, said water swelled due to heavy rains brought about by localized thunderstorms.
Rivera said strong winds came with the downpour.
On Monday, Honorato Jumawan, 56, of Barangay Binuangan in Isabela City, was hurt when a whirlwind destroyed his house. A concrete structure from the collapsed house hit him.
The villages of Baluno, Aguada, La Piedad, Timpul, and Isabela Proper are submerged in three-feet deep water.
The strong winds toppled many trees in Sunrise and Sumagdang villages.
Rivera advised residents to brace for more heavy rains as the state weather agency forecasts the thunderstorms to persist.
