MANILA, Philippines — State Grid Corporation of China (SGCC), the minority shareholder of National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP), donated 500,000 surgical masks to the Philippine Red Cross (PRC) to help fight the new coronavirus disease (COVID-19).

This follows a P1-billion donation from NGCP, coursed through the Office of the President, involving groceries for needy families and medical supplies for health workers. Beijing-based state firm SGCC — through State Grid International Development Co. Ltd.  —has a 40-percent stake in NGCP with the 60 percent held by majority shareholders Henry Sy Jr. and Robert Coyiuto Jr.

NGCP president Anthony Almeda said they would continue to look for opportunities to support the government in addressing COVID-19. “We recognize that the only way to defeat this global health threat is through our collective efforts,” Almeda said. The PRC will be distributing the masks to its front-liners.
