MVP thanks Duterte for ‘sincerity, kindness’ after apology

MANILA, Philippines — Business tycoon Manuel V. Panglinan thanked President Rodrigo Duterte for his sincerity and kindness after the Chief Executive apologized for his “hurtful words.”

“I would like to thank the President for his remarks tonight, most especially for his sincerity and kindness,” Pangilinan, also known by his initials MVP, said in a tweet early Tuesday morning.

In a late night address, Duterte apologized to Pangilinan and the Ayalas for his “hurtful words,” saying the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic had “humbled” him.

Duterte earlier ordered the crafting of new concession deals with Maynilad and Manila Water after labeling the current agreements as “disadvatangeous” to the Filipinos.

Pangilinan is the head of the Metro Pacific Group of Companies, with  Maynilad being one of its companies.

Duterte also threatened that the government would take over water distribution services if the water concessionaires refuse to accept the new water agreement.

But following the apology, Pangilinan assured that his group is committed to helping the government during the coronavirus crisis.

“I wish to assure him that our group is fully committed to being a partner of [government] in addressing the heartbreaking moments of COVID-19 on our people, in building a better tomorrow for them,” Pangilinan said.

“We are, and have always been here, for the country,” he added.
