LEGAZPI CITY – A police officer was wounded in an attack staged by unidentified gunmen on Thursday afternoon in a remote village in Libon town in Albay province, report said.
Police report said Police Staff Sergeant Marwin Macellana was wounded after he was shot at by the suspect while conducting security operation at around 3:15 p.m. at Barangay (village) Molosbolos.
The report said policeman and his unit were providing security to personnel of the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) distributing the cash assistance fund to the beneficiaries in the village.
After completing the distribution, the DSWD personnel were advised to move ahead in a separate vehicle.
While the policemen, onboard a patrol car, were returning to their base camp, they were attacked at Sitio (sub-village) Pinarik of said village. Police said a “sniper bullet wounded Marcellana.”
The policemen were able to retaliate and engaged the armed men in a moving firefight.
As they moved to Sitio Pinagbadila in Barangay Buga, the team was again engaged in an attack by another group of armed men. The armed group then fled after a brief firefight.
Police investigators could not yet determine the identities of the armed group.
