Vico Sotto asks public not to compare him with other mayors on COVID-19 action

MANILA, Philippines — Pasig City Mayor Vico Sotto on Wednesday urged the public not to compare him with other mayors in Metro Manila and their approaches in responding to the crisis brought by the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic.

In an interview with dzMM, Sotto was asked about the comments of some netizens comparing him to other mayors in the National Capital Region after earning praises for his leadership in dealing with the health crisis.

“Sana wag na po ikumpara lalo na ‘yung negatibong comparison. Hindi po panahon para sa ganyan. Dapat po nagtutulungan tayo (I hope we will not have these kinds of comparison, especially negative ones. It is not timely to do that. We should just help each other),” he said.

The 30-year-old and first-time mayor said the public may not have not noticed the actions taken by the other mayors in Metro Manila in dealing with the pandemic.

He said that even Pasig City copied some of the best practices of other cities, such as Valenzuela, Manila, and Quezon City.

He added that for instance, Pasig City copied from Quezon City the idea of setting up testing booths.

Among the measures the local government of Pasig City had initiated under the leadership of Sotto in dealing with the COVID-19 crisis include the deployment of mobile markets, distribution of food packs and other assistance to residents, and the planned city supplemental social amelioration program on top of the cash subsidy from the national government.
