95-year-old man in Mandaluyong City lauded for recovering from COVID-19

MANILA, Philippines — Applause and loud cheers greeted a 95-year-old man in Mandaluyong City as he leaves the hospital after recovering from the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19).

Older persons and those with pre-existing medical conditions tend to be more seriously ill with the disease, according to the World Health Organization, but Cresencio Junio has proven it otherwise.

As Junio was being wheeled out of Mandaluyong City Medical Center, health workers shouted, “Mabuhay si Tatay!”, as seen in the video posted on Facebook on Sunday, April 12, by Mandaluyong Mayor Menchie Abalos.

The mayor and her husband Benjamin Abalos Jr. were among those who congratulated Junio. 

“Isang [pag-asa] ang ibinigay sa atin ni [Lolo] Cresencio Junio na isang 95 [years] old na naka-recover sa COVID-19,” Abalos said in her post.

“Maraming salamat sa lahat ng mga doctors, nurses at sa lahat ng frontliners ng Mandaluyong City Medical Center (MCMC). Simbolo ka lolo ng liwanag na nadadanasan natin ngayon.”

 As of Sunday afternoon, the Philippines has 4,648 confirmed COVID-19 cases, including 297 deaths and 197 recoveries.
