MANILA, Philippines — The Philippines now has 4,428 total cases of coronavirus disease after recording 233 new cases, the Department of Health (DOH) said Saturday.
Data from DOH released at 4 p.m. also showed that 26 more patients have died from the disease, bringing the COVID-19 death toll in the country to 247.
Seventeen more patients have recovered from the ailment, bringing the total number of recoveries to 157.
The coronavirus disease is caused by the novel coronavirus or SARS-CoV-2 which first emerged in China’s Wuhan City in Hubei province in late last year.
The virus causes mild symptoms such as fever and cough but it can cause serious illness such as pneumonia for older adults and those with existing health conditions.
The World Health Organization declared COVID-19 as a pandemic which now has more than 1.6 million cases globally including more than 377,000 recoveries and more than 102,000 deaths, according to data from John Hopkins University.
