Ateneo shortens 2nd semester; students to receive passing mark, tuition refund

MANILA, Philippines — Ateneo de Manila University (ADMU) has shortened its second semester following the extension of the Luzon-wide enhanced community quarantine (ECQ).

The semester will end on May 8 under the revised schedule for the rest of the academic year 2019-2020, according to a memorandum from the ADMU Office of the Vice President.

Under the memo, eligible non-graduating students will also receive a passing mark instead of letter grades.

A copy of the memo was shared by The Guidon, the official student publication of the university, on Facebook on Tuesday.

With the earlier end of the semester, students will receive a refund of tuition and laboratory fees.

“Eligible non-graduating students will not have their yearly QPIs computed for AY 2019-2020, and are automatically promoted to the next school year, meaning that retention requirements are also waived for both major and minor programs this year,” wrote The Guidon in its social media post.

Graduating students will also receive passing marks, but will have the option to request for letter grades.

“They will also be cleared for graduation provided that they satisfy certain conditions. The memo also provided three scenarios for the graduation ceremonies,” the publication added.

The publication said any questions or concerns on the matter may be coursed through the Office of Student Services at oss.ls@ateneo.edu or through the Ateneo Student Blue Board Facebook page.

Students with academic concerns may also email their respective departments or the Associate Dean of Academic Affairs at adaa.ls@ateneo.edu.

Classes and other mass gatherings were suspended under the ECQ, which has been extended until April 30, 2020 in a bid to curb the further spread of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19)

As of Tuesday, the Department of Health recorded 3,764 COVID-19 cases in the country.

One hundred seventy seven have died while 84 have recovered.
