A train in Massachusetts, USA, was temporarily put out of service after an unidentified man licked the poles inside one of the coaches.
Amid the growing COVID-19 pandemic, the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) said they suspended an Orange Line train service “out of an abundance of caution,” as per Boston Herald yesterday, March 27.
A passenger reported the incident to a Transit ambassador at Tufts Medical Center Station. Transit police responded and searched the area but were unable to find the suspect, according to MBTA spokesman Joe Pesaturo.
The incident is just one of the several instances people have intentionally coughed on other people and food, as well as lick all sorts of things from toilets to grocery items, with some even making it into the internet trend #coronaviruschallenege.
Reports of such incidents come just as the number of COVID-19 cases and deaths continue to rise while health workers and researchers try to find a cure and vaccine. The United States has overtaken Italy and China for the most COVID-19 infections with more than 104,000 cases, as of this writing.
Globally 509,164 people have been infected, while 23,335 deaths have been recorded as of yesterday, March 27. Ian Biong /ra
