CITY OF CALAPAN –– A 74-year-old woman died in a fire on Wednesday night in Narra town in Palawan province, a police report said Thursday.

Mindoro, Marinduque, Romblon, Palawan (Mimaropa) police reported that Conchita Quiamco was trapped in her house when it caught fire at 7:20 p.m. in Sitio (sub-village) Mariwara in Barangay Princess Urduja.

The village chief reported the incident to the police, who responded to the scene Wednesday night. Police tried calling firemen but the house was already almost gutted.

Police learned from neighbor Christelyn Tagalog, 29, that when she saw Quiamco’s house burning, she shouted and asked for help from their neighbors. The neighbors did their best to stop the fire, but Quiamco was unable to get out of the house.

Initial investigation revealed that the fire started from a lamp that the victim was using, Lt. Col. Imelda Tolentino, Mimaropa police information officer, said.
