Biñan City records first person infected with COVID-19

MANILA, Philippines — Laguna province’s Biñan City has recorded its first confirmed case of the coronavirus disease 2019 or COVID-19.

The city government said Monday the patient is a 58-year-old Filipino female with no known travel history to countries hit by the novel coronavirus or SARS-CoV-2.

She started experiencing symptoms of the disease last March 7 and was only confirmed afflicted of the virus on Monday, March 23, the local government said.

The patient is now admitted to a hospital and the city health office is currently conducting contact tracing, the local government added.

“The public are encouraged to be vigilant and observe social distancing. Avoid posting of unverified news,” the Biñan City information office said in a Facebook post.

As of Monday, Biñan City has 301 persons under monitoring (PUMs) for COVID-19 while 44 others are under investigation (PUIs). Of these PUIs, 15 are confined in hospitals, the local government said.

To date, there are 396 people infected with COVID-19 in the Philippines. This number includes 33 deaths and 18 recoveries.
