Can cell phones cause cancer?

/ 07:41 AM June 06, 2011

THE WORLD Health Organization (WHO) announced on May 31, 2011 that “radiation from cell phones can possibly cause cancer.” This is the boldest statement yet from this international body.

WHO’s International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), stated that “radiofrequency electromagnetic fields have been classified as possibly carcinogenic to humans (group 2B) on the basis of an increased risk for glioma (brain tumor) that some studies have associated with the use of wireless phones.”

Thirty one scientists from 14 countries conducted an extensive review of various studies on the safety of cell phones, specifically evaluating “the potential carcinogenic hazards from exposure to radiofrequency electromagnetic fields.” Their findings were the basis for this recent WHO declaration.

In this column eleven years ago, in May 2000, we wrote about the possible adverse health effects of the frequent and prolonged use of cellular phone held against the face. Let us revisit the issue and modify our habit and behavior, where needed, to protect ourselves and our loved ones.

FEATURED STORIES

What is the current theory?

It is suspected that the frequent and extended use of a cellular phone (where the phone is right at the user’s cheek, the earpiece smack against the ear) might be associated with increased incidence of brain cancer.

How could the cellular phone “cause” harm?

The cellular phone antenna is the “probable culprit” in this medical concern. It is theorized that the antenna, which receives electromagnetic waves (EMW) or signals, transmits the same EMW to the brain of the person using the cellular phone (since the unit is in close proximity to the brain), and that these EMW might explain the suspected increase in the incidence of brain cancer among chronic users.

Is one cellular phone worse than the other?

The ones which are with dual band (1800 MHz) are said to be worse than the regular ones with only 900 MHz. Obviously, there are other factors, like length of exposure and proximity of the cellular phone to the brain, etc.

What other illness can cellular phone use cause?

The other condition often mentioned is leukemia and reduce sperm count. Again, we would like to emphasize that studies continue around the world to get more data on this issue.

Are microwave ovens safe?

The normal use of microwave ovens is safe, provided the protective shield is not broken. However, we caution users not to bring their face near the oven door while the oven is on, because the microwaves can harm the eyes by causing premature cataracts. A leaking microwave oven can also affect (inhibit) cardiac pacemakers. While the microwave oven is on, it is prudent to stay at least 8 feet away from it.

How about television sets?

Since television sets or computer monitors also emit some electromagnetic radiation, it is advisable not to go too close to the TV or monitor. The fact that medical science does not have any full-proof evidence that these EMW are harmful does not mean they are totally safe. It is best to be cautious and view the television at least 5 feet away from you.

What is the public to do?

Since there are serious medical concerns raised about the safety of the frequent use of the cellular phone, and especially with this new WHO announcement, it is wise and prudent for everyone using a cell phone to take proper precaution of protecting themselves. It is better to be safe than sorry later. It is best for parents to advise their children to use the cell phone only for urgent or emergency calls, because their brain is still developing and thus more vulnerable to the health risk. Let us set a good example in the use of cell phones (microwave oven, TV, etc.) for our children to follow.

As far as the cell phone is concerned, here are some precautionary measures we can take: (1) Limit the use of the cell phone to necessary calls only, and as briefly as possible; (2) Use text messaging, instead, especially for children; (3) For all calls, use hands-free devices (4) Whenever possible, keep the cell phone away from the body.

There is no question that the cell phone is one of the most wonderful devices man has ever invented and one that is most vital in today’s world, in business as well as for family and personal use. The cell phone is here to stay, like all the other electronic gadgets that make life easier, more comfortable, more secure, more efficient, and more productive for the majority of the people around the globe. Let us enjoy our cell phone and all the other electronic wonders we have safely and wisely.
