‘De Oro daily stops print editions, stays online amid COVID-19 scare
CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY –– One of Mindanao’s biggest local newspapers has decided to temporarily stop printing hard copies as part of its adjustment amid the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) threat.
In a statement posted online, the Mindanao Gold Star Daily (MGSD), which is based here, said it would continue delivering the news online, mainly through its website and social media platforms.
“While we remain committed as ever before to our tasks of informing and expressing views about matters of public concern, we also need to look after all those involved in our daily operations, down to the newsboy in the street. We also worry for them and their families,” the statement partly read.
The paper added: “We cannot afford to continue putting their health at risk knowing full well that the number of people testing positive for COVID-19 is shooting up.”
“Momentarily, our printing press will stop running until the dust clears. This decision, hopefully, will greatly reduce the risks that our workers face and keep them and their families out of harm’s way.”
The paper’s management assured the public that its reporters would continue working “to inform you about what’s happening in the city and Mindanao the best way we can.”
Only this time, MGSD said, “our operations will shift to cyberspace during this period of uncertainty.”
MGSD was established in 1989 by local businessman Ernesto Chu, steering it amid many challenges, reporting mostly local stories.
Through Chu’s initiative, MGSD began circulating in major cities and towns in Mindanao aided by the bureau offices located all throughout the island.
According to the paper’s profile, MGSD prints 60,000 copies per day.
