One new COVID-19 case, one more death recorded in Manila

MANILA, Philippines – A new COVID-19 case was recorded in the City of Manila while another patient died from the disease, Mayor Isko Moreno confirmed on Thursday.

Moreno’s revelation brings the total number of COVID-19 cases in Manila to 10, while the fatalities have now reached two.

“As of 5pm, may isa na naman po tayong confirmed na COVID-19 virus carrier, now we have a total of 10 na mga tiga Lungsod ng Maynila.  At isa na naman po sa kanila ang sumakabilang buhay na, nasa isang pribadong ospital dito sa lungsod ng Maynila,” Moreno said in a briefing.

“So simula nang may natagpuang COVID-19 virus sa lungsod […] dalawa na po ang mga sumakabilang buhay,” he added.

As of now, Luzon, including Metro Manila, is still under an enhanced community quarantine.  The Department of Health said that there are 217 confirmed cases in the Philippines, 17 of which have already died.  At least seven have recovered, while there are six patients who were allowed to go on a home quarantine mode.

The COVID-19 is a respiratory disease caused by the novel coronavirus that first emerged in China’s city of Wuhan in Hubei province in late 2019.

The International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses named the novel coronavirus as SARS-CoV-2.

Coronavirus is a family of viruses, which surfaces have a crown-like appearance. The viruses are named for the spikes on their surfaces.  Worldwide, over 193,000 COVID-19 cases have been recorded, 7,865 of which have died.  On the other hand, another 81,743 patients have recovered.
