MANILA, Philippines — Any help extended during “the worst crisis that ever hit” the Philippines—even from “epals”—should be greeted with gratitude, according to Senator Panfilo Lacson.

“During this time of the worst crisis that ever hit our country, any help offered and given, kahit may kasamang epal, taos-pusong pasalamatan natin alang-alang sa mamamayang Pilipino,” Lacson said in a tweet on Wednesday.

“Epal” is a Filipino slang that refers to people who are fond of grandstanding or doing shameless self-promotion.

(During this time of the worst crisis that ever hit our country, any help offered and given, even if it comes with grandstanding, let us wholeheartedly thank them for the sake of the Filipino people).

“Isigaw at ipagbunyi pa rin natin ng buong lakas at taginting: Mabuhay si Epalloyd!” he added.

(Let’s shout and rejoice: Long live Epalloyd!)

President Rodrigo Duterte has placed the Philippines under a state of calamity amid the rise in the number of COVID-19 cases in the country.

Donations have started to pour in from different sectors to aid in the government’s response against the spread of the disease, which has so far infected 187 people in the country.
