MANILA, Philippines — A woman, who was sleeping along a sidewalk, was arrested in Manila on Monday evening for violating the city’s curfew and resisting authorities, Manila Police District (MPD) said Tuesday.
A report from MPD’s Malate police station identified the street dweller as Dorothy Espejo, 69, who is residing along Leveriza Street in Malate.
A report showed that barangay officials were conducting inspections to check residents’ compliance with Manila’s curfew along Leveriza Street at 8:30 p.m. when they spotted Espejo.
Roused from sleep, Espejo shouted invectives at the barangay officers who informed her of the curfew. She argued with barangay officials, prompting them to arrest her and bring her to the Malate police station for detention and filing of appropriate charges.
Charges of breach of peace, Article 151 of Revised Penal Code or Resistance and Disobedience to a Person in Authority and Oral Defamation were being readied against Espejo.
Over the weekend, Manila government signed an ordinance on imposing a curfew from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. in the city to contain the further spread of COVID-19.
