LEGAZPI CITY — The local government of Catanduanes on Sunday declared a month-long suspension of classes at all levels in both public and private schools due to the threat of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19).
In an executive order, Governor Shirley Abundo said classes and other school activities will be suspended until April 14.
Teachers will work at home but still on call if needed.
Abundo also required all the local government units to implement measures to make sure that students will stay at home during the class suspension.
As a strict measure to prevent the spread of COVID-19, the province has also activated and mobilized its emergency operations center composed of more than 30 government agencies and other non-government organizations.
The emergency operations center is divided into four sectors such as planning, operations, logistics, and administrative and finance.
The COVID-19 outbreak emerged in China’s Wuhan City in Hubei province in late 2019. It is caused by the novel coronavirus or SARS-CoV-2.
The World Health Organization has declared COVID-19 a pandemic since it has infected more than 150,000 people and killed nearly 6,000 all over the world. To date, the Philippines has 140 people infected with COVID-19, including 11 deaths.
