MANILA, Philippines — After hours of negotiation, Greenhills mall hostage-taker Archie Paray released the hostages on Monday night.
About 30 individuals taken hostage by the disgruntled former security guard exited the mall in Greenhills in San Juan City after being held for about 10 hours.
The hostage-taker reportedly had a pistol and four grenades, but on the prodding of San Juan Mayor Francis Zamora, agreed to leave his weapons before going down the mall.
Zamora, talking to Paray via phone call, assured his safety.
“Kailangan iiwan mo ang baril mo at granada. Hindi pwedeng bababa ka na may granada. Pero ginagarantiya ko yung kaligtasan mo,” he said.
[You have to leave behind your gun and grenades. You can’t come with the grenades. But I guarantee your safety.]
“Lahat ng hostages bababa. Walang maiiwan,” Zamora asked Paray, to which the hostage-taker agreed.
[All the hostage will come down. Nobody will be left behind.]
