LEGAZPI CITY — A 23-year-old criminology student died, while another one was brought to the hospital for treatment, after suffering injuries during fraternity hazing rites in Bulan town, Sorsogon on Sunday.
Major Joel Triñanes, Bulan police chief, said Omer Despabiladeras, a student of the Solis Institute of Technology, underwent hazing, along with 17 others, for the Tau Gamma Fraternity in Barangay San Vicente around 10 a.m. on February 16.
Despabiladeras collapsed during the hazing and was rushed by four fraternity members to the Pantaleon Gotladera Memorial Hospital, but the attending physician declared him dead on arrival around 4 p.m.
Another student, Alfredo Gonia, was undergoing treatment at the Sorsogon Provincial Hospital in Sorsogon City.
Based on the police report, the victim was found to have sustained hematoma, or a solid swelling of clotted blood within tissues, on his legs, back and other parts of his body.
The incident was reported to the police by a nurse of the hospital at about 6 p.m., the report added.
The Bulan Municipal Police Station requested for a necropsy examination of the victim. Meanwhile, two alleged frat members are currently under the custody of the police, the police report said.
