Sonsona takes on Dominican in 2nd comeback battle
Marvin “Marvelous” Sonsona is scheduled to make his second comeback fight on Feb. 4 against Carlos “El Flaco” Fulgencio of the Dominican Republic at the Hoops Dome in Lapu-Lapu City.
Sonsona made a successful return to the ring last October at the same venue by beating Mexican Carlos Jacobo by unanimous decision.
Fulgencio (19W-5L-1D, 12 KOs), whose ring moniker means “skinny” is listed at 5’9”, a couple of inches taller than Sonsona. He hails from Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic and has fought twice in the US in 2009, losing to Abner Mares and Antonio Escalante. In his last bout, he won by split decision in Mexico against Oswaldo Castro.
The 21-year-old Sonsona (15W-1L-1D, 12 KOs) had a brief reign as WBO superflyweight champion in 2009 and is now campaigning as a superbantamweight. The southpaw from Gen. Santos City went into a self-imposed hiatus for 20 months but promised to be more serious in his boxing career prior to his comeback win against Jacobo.
The undercard will feature a Philippine lightweight title bout between Jay Solmiano and Rey Labao.
