P76,000 up for grabs in Sinulog Open Chess

A total P76,000 will be up for grabs in the 2012 Sinulog Open Chess Tournament which will kick-off this weekend at the SM City Cebu.

The event is organized by the Cebu Executives and Professionals Chess Association (CEPCA) and bankrolled by the Cebu City government through Mayor Michael Rama.

The champion team will receive P25,000 in cash and a customized trophy. The tournament is held in line with the Sinulog festival. More than 25 teams are expected to vie in the seven-round Swiss System event.

Leading the contenders are teams from the University of San Jose Recoletos with two teams, University of the Visayas with three teams, University of San Carlos also with three teams, University of Cebu with two squads and one each from the Cebu Institute of Technology-University (CIT-U) and the Cebu Doctors University (CDU)

Barangays Mabolo and Guadalupe will also field in entries while Talisay and Lapu-Lapu City will likewise compete along with Colonade Mall, Deep Blue Chess Club, Oriental Port and Allied Services Corporation (OPASCOR), Julie’s Bakeshop, Aboitizland and Handuraw.

Visiting teams from Bohol, Dumaguete and Bayawan will also see action.
