/ 05:20 AM February 01, 2020

BAGUIO CITY—With the temperature dropping to 11.2 degrees Celsius at 5 a.m. on Friday, the summer capital experienced the coldest morning yet this year.

The nippy weather was caused by the prevailing northeast monsoon, or “hanging amihan,” in northern Luzon and would last until the end of February or early March, according to the weather station here. In nearby Mt. Sto. Tomas, situated 2,260 meters above sea level, the temperature registered at 9.7 degrees, also at 5 a.m. on Friday.

On Jan. 4, the temperature in the city plunged to 11.4 degrees, the first time it hit below 12 degrees this year. Last year, the coldest morning was recorded at 9 degrees on Jan. 31.

The coldest temperature ever recorded here was on Jan. 18, 1961, at 6.3 degrees. —Valerie Damian
