The Senate justice committee approved on Wednesday a measure establishing the Philippine Marshal Service, a new law enforcement unit tasked to protect judges and justices in the country. “The proposed security unit would also help detect threats against members of the judiciary who are not aware of any hostile plan against them,” said Sen. Richard Gordon, who chairs the committee. The marshals would carry out as well the forfeiture of assets of criminals found guilty by the courts, he added. —Marlon Ramos
