TACLOBAN CITY –– To prolong the life of its sanitary landfill which was opened last year, the Tacloban City government has exhorted villagers to observe proper waste segregation.
Tacloban City Mayor Alfred Romualdez appealed to the villagers to practice waste \segregation as mandated under the solid waste management ordinance.
Violators face a fine ranging from P300 to P3,000 coupled with community service.
Officer-in-charge Leoncio Parado II of the City General Services, in a statement, asked barangay officials to set an example among their constituents on the proper disposal of their household wastes.
“They should conduct intensive monitoring (on proper waste segregation among their constituents). We have an ordinance on solid waste management (City Ordinance 2017-13-37), so I guess there’s no reason for them not to implement it in their respective barangays,” he said.
Another measure that would be implemented in the city to help lengthen the loading capacity of the sanitary landfill is to regulate the use of plastic in the city.
Improper waste disposal has raised concern that the P80 million worth of facility would not last 10 years as projected, but would be good for just three years.
The city’s sanitary landfill located in Barangay San Roque, which is about 13 kilometers away from the city proper, was opened in April last year.
