Today, Jan. 14, is the 110th birth anniversary of National Artist for Historical Literature Carlos Quirino.
A prominent biographer, Quirino wrote one of the earliest biographies of Jose Rizal, “The Great Malayan.”
He was also the first Filipino correspondent for the United Press Institute.
In 1997, then President Fidel Ramos created historical literature as a new category in the National Artist awards, with Quirino as the first recipient.
