PNP always a problem for any administration, says Duterte
MANILA, Philippines — President Rodrigo Duterte on Tuesday aired his frustration over the Philippine National Police (PNP), saying the organization has always been a problem for any administration.
“You know historically, the police, the PNP has always been a problem for any administration. Alam ninyo yan (You know that). And I think that with the remaining two years, if I can just fix a third of what’s bugging the PNP, and that is corruption,” Duterte said in an ambush interview.
Amid questions of a new PNP chief, Duterte said he has given Interior Secretary Eduardo Año to fix the problems within the police force.
“I have given Secretary Año the blanket authority to get rid of corruption and it is on his shoulder, the future, of how the police would behave in the coming years,” Duterte said.
Duterte has yet to appoint a new PNP chief, months after Oscar Albayalde stepped down from his post.
