MANILA, Philippines — Guards of Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) stopped a female visitor from smuggling tobacco at Surigao District Jail Annex-Lianga on Wednesday night.

In a statement BJMP spokesman Maj. Xavier Solda said Jail Officer 1 Rebecca Guillen II and Jail Officer 1 Peter Gastardo at around 11 p.m. caught the suspect, whose name was not disclosed, hiding four bars of SSS trisbee.

Solda said the tobacco was wrapped around the right ankle of the jail visitor.

In the same statement, Surigao District Jail warden Jail Insp. Samuel Nasiad said the jail visitor was denied entry for violating the anti-smoking policy inside the jail.

Asked if the visitor was arrested, Solda said the suspect was not detained, saying BJMP guards only lectured her on jail policies for contraband.

“She’s putting her visiting privileges at stake. Her opportunity to visit might be suspended. Ours is simply starting the year right,” Solda said in a text message.
