Mild yet shallow quakes hit Davao del Sur on New Year’s Eve

MANILA, Philippines – At least two mild but shallow earthquakes have struck Davao del Sur towns and another in Sultan Kudarat on Tuesday, New Year’s Eve, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).

Phivolcs said in its 4:19 p.m. bulletin that a magnitude 3.2 earthquake was recorded six kilometers southwest of Sulop in Davao del Sur, at a depth of just seven kilometers.  The tectonic movement was felt in Davao del Sur towns of Bansalan (Intensity III), Sulop (Intensity II), and Hagonoy (Intensity I).

Instrumental Intensities were also noted in Malugon, Sarangani (Intensity II), and in Kidapawan City, Koronodal City, and South Cotabato (Intensity I).

This movement comes after a magnitude 2.8 earthquake occurred 12 kilometers southwest of Bansalan at 8:32 a.m. on Tuesday.  It was also at a depth of seven kilometers, causing Instrumental Intensities in Koronodal City.

After the Sulop quake, Phivolcs also noted said that a magnitude 3.2 quake struck off the coast of Columbio, Sultan Kudarat at 5:25 p.m. on Tuesday.

No aftershocks and no tsunami warnings have been raised as of now.
