In a disturbing act right before Christmas Eve, a man allegedly attacked a homeless woman who was trying to find a place to rest. While the assault led to the woman’s death, the authorities were able to arrest the suspect days later, on Dec. 26.
The Madera Police Department identified the 41-year-old homeless woman as Joanne Otero from California, United States. Otero sustained multiple wounds and was pronounced dead last Tuesday, Dec. 23, as per The Fresno Bee on Dec. 24.
Authorities believe the woman was in search for a place to sleep when she was brutally attacked, ABC-owned TV station KFSN reported on Dec. 26. The police investigators worked through the holiday to track the suspect down.
By coordinating with local business owners who have surveillance footage of the assault, the officers were able to track down the suspect, 49-year-old Carlos Urias.
The reports did not state Urias’ motivations for assaulting the woman. Urias is currently detained in Madera County’s jail for murder. Cha Lino/JB
