Voting along party lines, members of the Democrat-dominated US House of Representatives impeached Trump on Dec. 18 for abuse of power and obstruction of Congress, for threatening to withhold US aid to Ukraine if its president did not investigate the son of former US Vice President Joe Biden for alleged corruption.
Biden was seen as Trump’s closest rival in the next presidential election.
Trump described his impeachment as “an illegal, partisan attempted coup” and accused the Democrats of not giving him due process.
The ball is now in the Republican-dominated US Senate, where many see Trump’s eventual acquittal.
With Speaker Nancy Pelosi taking her time sending the impeachment papers to the Senate, people will have to wait until January for the next chapter of this political drama.
