93% of Filipinos say they will face 2020 with hope, survey shows

MANILA, Philippines — “Practically all” Filipinos said they will face the approaching year 2020 with hope, the latest Pulse Asia survey released Friday showed.

A total of 93 percent of Filipinos said they will face 2020 with hope while seven percent are undecided. Meanwhile, less than one percent (0.2 percent) said they will face the approaching new year without hope.

The 93 percent hopefulness rate this year is two percentage points higher than the 91 percent in December 2018.

In terms of location, the percentage of Filipinos who said they will face 2020 with hope increased in the National Capital Region, Visayas, and Mindanao, but declined in Balance Luzon.

For socio-economic class, the percentage of Filipinos who said they will face 2020 with hope increased in Class E and declined in class ABC while there were no changes in Class D.

Expectations

Meanwhile, 48 percent of Filipinos said they are expecting the coming holiday season to be more prosperous for them and their families than last year while 11 percent expect it to be poorer than last year.

Some 41 percent of Filipinos said they are expecting the coming holiday season to be the same as last year.

There was a slight decline (one percent) in the percentage of Filipinos who expect the coming holiday season to be more prosperous than last year and a slight increase (three percent) on the percentage of those who expect it to be poorer.

There was an increase in the percentage of those who expect the coming Christmas to be more prosperous than last year in the National Capital Region, Balance Luzon, Mindanao but a 25-percentage point drop in the Visayas.

The nationwide survey was based on a sample of 1,200 representative adults 18 years old and above and has a ± 2.8% error margin at the 95% confidence level.

The survey fieldwork was conducted from December 3 to 8, 2019 using face-to- face interviews.
