Faces of the News: Roger Casogay
When sports officials couldn’t decide who would carry the flag for Team Philippines in the opening of the Southeast Asian Games, they did the next best thing: appoint the country’s top athletes to do the job.
At the closing ceremony, there was no such dilemma. The only choice was Roger Casogay, who restored people’s faith in humanity after opting to rescue a fallen competitor over a gold medal bid.
Rescuing Indonesian Arip Nurhidayat during a surfing competition pushed Casugay into mainstream attention and got him praise from Indonesian President Joko Widodo.
Fate took note as well, rewarding Casugay with a gold two days later for surfing’s longboard event.
