MANILA, Philippines — Airport officials on Tuesday discouraged travelers from going to the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (Naia) as it imposes a 12-hour closure of all airport terminals amid the onslaught of Typhoon Tisoy.

The Manila International Airport Authority (Miaa) announced the 12-hour closure of Naia’s Terminal 1 to 4  from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. on Monday night. It also advised passengers to contact their respective airlines regarding their flight schedules.

“We are maintaining the closure of the terminals, kaya nga ho sinabi namin na ang mga pasahero ay dini-discourage namin pumunta,” Miaa General Manager Ed Monreal said in a press briefing.

(We are maintaining the closure of the terminals, that’s why we said that we are discouraging passengers to still come to the airport).

“Pero ‘pag nandito ang mga pasahero at nandito na, siyempre ho hindi naman pwede natin silang ipagtabuyan. Unfortunately, they should not expect too much comfort pagka-ganun hong oras na magaantay ka ng dose oras dito,” he added.

(But if they are already here, of course, we cannot shoo them away. Unfortunately, they should not expect too much comfort if they would have to wait for 12 hours).

Monreal further advised passengers who have flights beyond 11 p.m. to still coordinate with their respective airlines to confirm whether or not their flight will still push through.

“Dapat ho bago sila tumuloy sa paliparan, siguraduhin niyo munang meron… confirmed booking, kailangan ho confirmed… tawagan nila ang airline kung ang flight na ‘yon ay tutuloy dahil may pagkakataon ho at siguro kulang ang eroplano dahil nando’n pa sa out station, wala pa at hindi tutuloy ang flight na ‘yon, so magkakaron ho sila ng problema,” he said.

(Before they proceed to the airport they must first make sure they have flights… confirmed booking, it should be confirmed… They should call their airline if their flight will push through because there are times or maybe when they lack airplanes because those are still at out station, not yet here and the flight will be postponed, so they will have a problem.)

He also encouraged airline companies to disseminate necessary information to its passengers ahead of time.
