Pagasa warns of storm surge in parts of PH amid Typhoon Tisoy

MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) on Monday issued a warning against storm surge in surge-prone areas in the country amid Typhoon Tisoy.

Pagasa said storm surge over 3 meters in height may occur in coastal areas in Camarines Norte ( Mercedes and Mandao), Camarines Sur (Cabusao, Bombon, Calabanga, Tinambac, and Sipocot), and Catanduanes (Bagamanoc, Baras, Bato, Viga, Panganiban and Gigmoto).

Likewise, a storm surge of one to 3 meters in height may occur over several coastal areas in Quezon, Camarines Norte, Camarines Sur, Catanduanes, and Samar.

Tropical Cyclone Warning Signal (TCWS) Signal No. 1 has been raised over 11 areas in the country—Catanduanes, Camarines Sur, Albay, Sorsogon, southern portion of Camarines Norte, Masbate, Romblon, southern portion of Quezon, Northern Samar, northern portion of Eastern Samar, and northern portion of Samar province.

“Sea travel is risky over the seaboards of areas under TCWS, the seaboards of Northern Luzon, the western seaboard of Palawan, central seaboards of Visayas, and the northern and eastern seaboards of Mindanao due to prevailing or forecast rough sea conditions which may be perilous for maritime activities, especially for those using small seacrafts,” Pagasa said in a weather bulletin posted 2 p.m.

As of 1 p.m., Monday, Pagasa said Tisoy was spotted 140 kilometers east northeast of Catarman, Northern Samar with maximum sustained winds of 150 kilometers per hour (kph) and gustiness of up to 185 kph.

It is moving west at 20 kph.

It is forecast to make landfall in Catanduanes, Albay or Sorsogon between Monday night and early Tuesday morning.
