Track of Typhoon Kammuri
MANILA, Philippines — Some sports venues for the 30th Southeast Asian (SEA) Games might feel the “direct effect” of Typhoon Kammuri on December 3 and 4, the state weather bureau said Thursday.
Pagasa weather specialist Sheila Reyes told INQUIRER.net in a phone interview that since Kammuri is categorized as a typhoon, it’s coverage could be vast that rain and strong winds will likely affect Central and Southern Luzon, including Metro Manila.
The 2019 SEA Games have scheduled sporting events in Cavite, Batangas, Laguna, Pampanga, Zambales, Tarlac, and Metro Manila.
“Hindi po natin sinasabi na it will directly hit, pero most probably po na may direct effect po ‘yung bagyo sa mga lugar na may mga activities po sa SEA Games,” Reyes said.
(We’re not saying that it will directly hit, but most probably the typhoon will have a direct effect on areas where SEA Games will hold activities.)
Reyes, however, noted that since Pagasa is doing a five-day forecast on the typhoon, their current prediction is subjected to uncertainty and may be changed.
In its 5 p.m. weather update, Pagasa said that Kammuri was last spotted 1,425 kilometers east of Visayas.
The state weather bureau also said Kammuri is packing maximum sustained winds of 130 kilometers per hour (kph) near the center and gustiness of up to 160 kph.
The typhoon was moving northwest at 10 kph, it added.
Pagasa earlier said Kammuri is predicted to enter the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) on the morning of the 2019 SEA Games opening day on Saturday, November 30, or Sunday morning.
It also said that Kammuri will be locally named “Tisoy” once it enters PAR.
