DILG wants BJMP to manage all prov’l jails

The Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) on Saturday threw its support behind a proposed bill seeking to transfer the management of all provincial jails to the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP).

In a statement, Interior Secretary Eduardo Año said the operation of jails was better left to the BJMP, whose personnel were trained on jail management.

“This will result in more professionally-run provincial jails,” Año said.

Senate Bill No. 1100, authored by Sen. Ronald “Bato” Dela Rosa, a former police and Bureau of Corrections chief, seeks the transfer to the BJMP of the management of all detention facilities in the country.

Año said the transfer of jail management to the BJMP was “logical” to allow for a “consistent and fair” administration and care of inmates nationwide.—MELVIN GASCON
