Bill postponing Barangay, SK polls to 2020 awaits Duterte’s signature

MANILA, Philippines — The bill postponing the village and youth council elections from May 2020 to Dec. 5, 2022 is now a step away from becoming law.

This, after both chambers of Congress ratified on Monday the bicameral conference committee report on the disagreeing provisions of Senate Bill No. 1043 and House Bill No. 4933. The proposed law will now be transmitted to President Rodrigo Duterte for his consideration.

It was the President who called on Congress to postpone the local polls for the third time under his term. The House already realigned the P5.7-billion budget for the election under the proposed P4.1 trillion national budget for 2020.

The cancelation of the 2020 barangay polls also effectively extends the three-year term of incumbent barangay officials, who won in the May 2018 elections, to four years.
