Phivolcs: No tsunami warning after magnitude 6.5 earthquake in Cotabato

MANILA, Philippines – The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) has assured residents in Mindanao that they have not raised any tsunami warning after another earthquake rocked Cotabato on Thursday.

“A strong earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 6.5 occurred in Tulunan, Cotabato on 2019 October 31 at 09:11 AM (Philippine Standard Time) located at 06.90o N, 125.07 oE with depth of 006 km. No destructive tsunami threat exists based on available data,” Phivolcs said in its latest advisory.

“This is for information purposes only and there is no tsunami threat to the Philippines from this earthquake,” the agency added.

The earthquake on Thursday is the second which hit Tulunan town, after a magnitude 6.4 temblor on Tuesday.

According to Phivolcs, the earthquakes are a series of fault movements in Central Mindanao, and are connected to other previous earthquakes like the magnitude 5.6 that struck Makilala, Cotabato on July 9 and a magnitude 6.3 near Tulunan. /je
