Magnitude 5.4 aftershock rattles Tulunan, Cotabato

MANILA, Philippines — A magnitude 5.4 earthquake rattled Tulunan, Cotabato on Tuesday, hours after a strong tremor struck the area,  the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said.

The quake struck at 4:33 p.m. at 27 kilometers northeast of Tulunan.

Phivolcs said that the tremor was of tectonic origin, and had a two-kilometer depth of focus.

It was also felt in the following areas, and recorded at various intensities:

Reported Intensity V – Kidapawan City

Instrumental Intensity V – Kidapawan City; Malungon, Sarangani

Instrumental Intensity III – Tupi, South Cotabato; Alabel, Sarangani

Instrumental Intensity II – General Santos City; Gingoog City

While no damage is expected, residents were advised to brace for further aftershocks, Phivolcs added.

The municipality of Tulunan was earlier struck by a strong magnitude-6.6 quake, 13 days after a magnitude-6.3 earthquake struck in the same area.

The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council said that the devastating quake left one dead and 43 others injured.
