MANILA, Philippines — At least five people were reported dead while 173 others were injured after a magnitude 6.6 earthquake jolted central Mindanao on Tuesday morning.
Nestor Narciso, 66, a resident of Koronadal City, died from injuries, initial reports from the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council said.
A total of 173 people were injured from Lanao del Norte, Cotabato, South Cotabato and Sarangani.
A father and his child were killed in Arakan, Cotabato, local officials said.
In Tulunan town, a pregnant woman was also killed after being hit by debris, according to the mayor.
Twenty-three local government units have also suspended classes, the NDRRMC added,
The earthquake struck 26 kilometers northeast of Tulunan, Cotabato at 9:04 a.m., the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said.
As of 3 p.m., a total of 114 were recorded — 75 were plotted and 14 were felt — ranging from magnitude 1.6 to 6.1 and Intensity of I to VII, the NDRRMC said.
Tuesday’s earthquake came about two weeks since a 6.3 magnitude tremor jolted Tulunan town.
