MANILA, Philippines — Vice President Leni Robredo on Sunday said she was OK with reviewing the implementation of the K-to-12 Basic Education Program to pinpoint how it could be improved.
While acknowledging that the intent of the program is good, Robredo lamented the issues in its implementation.
“I am OK with having the program reviewed so we can assess the shortcomings. What is the problem?” Robredo said in Filipino in her weekly AN radio show “BISErbisyong LENI.”
“Electronics courses are being taught, but there are no equipment, no hands-on experience. If the shortcoming is like this, graduates would really have a hard time looking for jobs since they are not ready,” she added.
Robredo said the review of the program should also cover seeking ways to ensure that the graduates of the program would be ready for employment.
“If that is the condition of senior high school students — that many do not get to learn hands-on, many do not have equipment — no one will hire them since they did not experience the actual.)
House Speaker Alan Peter Cayetano has proposed the review of the effectiveness of the 12-year basic education program.
The Department of Education (DepEd) had also expressed its openness for the review.
“DepEd hopes the outcome of the review will spur renewed commitment and initiatives among lawmakers, advocates, and other stakeholders in aid of realizing the K to 12 program’s overall goal – hone holistically developed Filipino learners with 21st century skills,” DepEd said.
