MANILA, Philippines — The Integrated Bar of the Philippines (IBP) on Tuesday said the tradition of seniority was followed with the appointment of Associate Justice Diosdado Peralta as the new Chief Justice of the Supreme Court.
The IBP said Peralta served the longest as Associate Justice of the Supreme Court among the three aspirants nominated by the Judicial and Bar Council.
Peralta replaced former Chief Justice Lucas Bersamin who retired on October 18.

“We are hopeful that under his (Peralta’s) leadership the judiciary will resolve cases much faster inasmuch as his 25 years as magistrate are notable for speedy disposition of cases and innovations to expedite court processes,” Atty. Domingo Egon Cayosa, National President of the IBP, said.
Cayosa vowed that the IBP will work with Peralta to achieve “Justice Bilis” (Fast Justice).
The 67-year-old Peralta was appointed as an associate justice of the High Court on January 14, 2009 and will retire on March 27, 2022.
He beat Associate Justice Estela Perlas-Bernabe and Associate Justice Andres Reyes Jr. for the top post in the High Court. /je
